Abstract

This study explores the impact of instructor feedback and engagement on learner participation and success in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). By analyzing 1,032 forum posts from a selected MOOC on educational technology, the research identifies key communication patterns between instructors and learners. The study categorizes instructor communication into informational, motivational, and clarificatory types, revealing that personalized and informal interactions significantly enhance learner engagement. The findings indicate that timely responses, particularly within the first 48 hours of a new module, improve interaction rates and learner retention. Additionally, the research highlights the emotional impact of instructor feedback, with motivational posts correlating with higher thread longevity and greater course participation. The study emphasizes the importance of instructor presence in maintaining a supportive and interactive learning environment, underscoring the need for personalized, timely, and affective communication strategies. These results provide valuable insights for course designers and educators aiming to optimize learner engagement in large-scale online courses.
